| Hi Nicole,
When people first hear about the science of reading, they naturally start to look for ways to change their instruction to be more aligned with the reading research.
One powerful shift is to be more intentional with the time spent reading aloud to students.
Fortunately, most elementary and many middle school teachers are already spending class time reading to their students. And if not, time for reading aloud can easily be integrated into the class schedule, regardless of the curriculum or approach to reading instruction that is currently used.
Reading to your class can serve a variety of important purposes:
- increasing content knowledge
- exposing students to complex syntax and text structure
- building community and connection with students of diverse backgrounds
- promoting the rich discussion that builds word knowledge
- modeling fluent reading
I've created an intentional read aloud routine to help you maximize this instructional opportunity.
Download the read aloud routine and try it today. I'm looking forward to your feedback!
Take care,
Stephanie
